RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack on an underground arms cache in Syria used by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through surveillance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountains just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a series of approach shafts leading to the facility... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the attack on Saturday evening and each participating jet made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - referred to as ISIS - established militant control over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation shows our UK leadership, and determination to work closely with our allies, to eradicate any re-emergence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister stated.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank every member of British forces involved in this operation for their expertise and their valour," the Defence Secretary added. "They were among a great many UK service members deployed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to eliminate militants who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

During December, the United States armed forces conducted what it called a "large-scale strike" on IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an ambush claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations reports IS still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Iraq and Syria.
